Girls can wear jeans
And cut their hair short
Wear shirts and boots
'Cause it's OK to be a boy
But for a boy to look like a girl is degrading
'Cause you think that being a girl is degrading
I just saw Madonna's new video, thanks to Yan, who taped it when it aired late Tuesday night and brought in the tape today. I liked the video, and liked the song even more. I don't usually think of Madonna as a feminist, but this song definitely is. It's enough to make me want to check out her recent albums. I did like her early 80's stuff, and a few of the songs from the late 80's, but I haven't paid any attention to her in about ten years. Perhaps I should start. Seeing the video also reminded me of the episode of _Behind the Music_ Jim & I watched on Tuesday night. It was about Jefferson Airplane, and it paid incredible, lingering attention to the details of whom in the band Grace Slick slept with and when she started sleeping with them, including lengthy interviews with all of the band members about their reactions when Grace picked a new lover and how they felt about their own relationships with her -- or, in one guy's case, his very bitter reaction to Grace not sleeping with him. I was annoyed; would they have gone into this much detail about a guy having sex with a bunch of different women? Somehow I don't think so; the other episodes I've seen of _Behind the Music_ barely mention people's sexual experiences -- heck, John Lennon's illegitimate son got about three minutes of discussion, as opposed to the forty or so minutes Grace Slick's sex life got. |
celebration!
I finished all of my code! I managed to check in last night just in time to zoom off for Trip's birthday dinner at Thai City. When I got in this morning it turned out that Chris-my-coworker had found a bug in my code, but he went ahead and fixed it so that the demo that was scheduled for this morning could occur. He was apologetic for touching my code, but I think my overwhelming gratitude convinced him that I was fine with it. Now I'm investigating the changes that he made and attempting to understand them. I know I learned bitwise operations 2 years back, when I was taking C, but I have no real memory of them, except a vague sense that they're nifty. |
