Partitioned For Your Convenience

/dev/dsk/c0t3d0s1: Work

My love-hate relationship with my job continues. Some days things are great; I get a lot done, learn some new things, and have the chance to pace myself so that I don't spiral downwards into stress. Other days (like today) I'm pulled off of my usual work to handle special requests, most of them very stupid ones. My cubemate has been sick, so I've been handling the urgent calls for his building during the last few days.

I'll probably be at Cadence until I move. I think I'm resigned now; even the days that really suck are better than they were a month or two ago. Then again, that might change when I'm back in the thick of classes, and Earl's doing classes too so we're only seeing each other twice a month again.

/dev/dsk/c0t3d0s2: Everything

Overall, I think I'm doing well. I'm getting enough sleep. I'm getting things more-or-less taken care of. I don't feel frantic. I do need to start job-hunting, but right now my only deadline is the arbitrary one of getting my resume updated before WorldCon.

/dev/dsk/c0t3d0s3: School

No school! Not even a little bit! I'm so glad for the break. I'd forgotten what it was like to be free after work.

Fall quarter at Foothill starts towards the end of the September. I'm currently waffling between Calculus and Finite Mathematics. I think the latter will win, because starting a Calc sequence only to switch schools (after the LA move) seems silly. On the other hand, failing to start Calc this autumn means that I have to take it in the spring if I'm going to apply to fulltime schools in fall of 1998.

Hopefully I'll find such a wonderful job when I move that I won't mind putting off my school until Earl is done with his. That would be ideal. I doubt it's going to happen, though.

/dev/dsk/c0t3d0s4: Books

I'm slowly working my way through Moving Mars. It's good, but it hasn't enthralled me enough that I read it instead of doing anything else. I meant to sit around Trip's last night reading, but ended up playing with his Macintosh instead.

I want to start reading some of the books I bought, such as Nicola Griffith's Amonnite, and perhaps Niccolo Rising by Dorothy Dunnet, as I am in something of a mood for dense historical fiction. First, though, I must read my borrowed books, and thus I continue with Greg Bear.

/dev/dsk/c0t3d0s5: Music

I made two tapes last night; Fiona Apple/October Project on one, and Suzanne Vega/Dar Williams (with two Kate Bush songs to fill in the gap) as the other. Tonight I'll hopefully make two more, and will thus be armed with music when I drive the terribly long distance to LA tomorrow afternoon.

I really like the new Dar Williams album, although I'm still just getting familiar with it.

I have a huge list of CDs to go shopping for, just as soon as I feel like I have money to spend. October, maybe. October would be a good time to buy CDs.

/dev/dsk/c0t3d0s6: Earl

He's in LA this week. I'm driving down this weekend, for the LaRP, and I'll be staying with him. We probably won't have much time together, but I'm not stressed about it, which is what one would call a Really Good Sign.

Of course, I say all of this knowing that he's riding back up from LA with me on Monday, and then staying until Sunday. A last week in Mountain View together; his classes start on the 27th, and after that point he'll be far too busy to come up for a week at a time. We'll be back to seeing each other twice a month, probably. I'm not looking forward to it.

/dev/dsk/c0t3d0s7: Friends

I had a nice lunch with Czr yesterday. We behaved well and did not talk about Mage more than twice, thus saving us from writhing in agony while we wait for the next session. Instead we gossiped about people we know, which was soothing.

I was supposed to have dinner with Jill sometime this week, but I've been supremely unmotivated. I need to send her apologetic email and suggesting that we come up with a firm date.
