Preparing to Drive

In which the author rattles on about various things, including Rent and Bujold books.

I am about to drive a lot, but I thought I'd write a tiny bit first.

Gaming has moved to Thursdays due to my Mon/Wed class, so I didn't get home last night until about 1130 (gaming, then a long time spent standing by my car talking to Jim, which is something I really should write about -- except where on earth would I start? So I'll write about it later, I promise. I'm not trying to be secretive, I'm just overwhelmed by things which are really quite ordinary. Anyway.). And then I phoned Czr and talked to him for not very long, and then I read some, and next thing I knew it was about 2am. Needless to say, I didn't spring out of bed at 7 -- instead I sort of oozed out at 830.

(A brief aside to complain about how, during the writing of the above paragraph, four people stopped by my cube to chat. Not to impart any useful information, but just to chat. I am an excuse used to avoid work. How cheering. How do I make them go away?)

* * *

I've read all the Bujold through Brothers in Arms at this point. I even got three chapters into Mirror Dance, but I had to put it down. Too intense right now -- I'm taking in to LA with me to read while I'm around Earl. That way, when I get to the really nerve-wracking parts, I can put the book down and hug him. Always a fine plan.

I get to see Rent on Saturday! Despite the fact that it has horrible lyrics in places -- some of the worst forced rhymes I've ever heard -- I have become fond of the musical. It's always annoying when something is called 'the definitive X of the decade' and then that turns out to be an accurate description. Rent hits all of my GenX buttons really well. Embarassing, that.

Seeing shows is always better than not, though, even if I don't like the show very much. I like watching things come together, and it's so much fun to see the music as part of a whole -- to see the people producing the music, and the context of the songs, and the motion and the lights and the reaction of the audience. Rent is going to be fabulous for that.

Time to drive a lot. I'm going back home to get the bag of books I forgot & to have lunch, then down the 85 to the 101 to the 152 to the 5, and then to Los Angeles.
