spring is such a tease
Spring is flirting with the Bay Area, appearing one day with sweet warm sunshine and gentle breezes only to vanish a few day later, leaving us with cloudy skies, chill wind, and temperature in the 40's. My iris sits in its pot, thinking about blooming but worried about receiving a cold reception. Will it rain all of this week, as forecasts predict? (Not that it's raining now.) Will my new plants, the jalapenos and tomatoes, the strawberry, peppermint, and asian cucumber -- will they be upset by the change in the weather and refuse to flourish after all? And how can I reorganise my closets if I can't be sure that my summer clothing will be appropriate to the weather? Spring, dearest, make up your mind already. The weekend was really nice, filled with pleasant domestic activity as I'd been hoping. I did briefly regret not stopping by fanime, but on the whole I was much happier to shop and cook and putter around the house, without worrying about spending money or dealing with crowds. Saturday Jim and I slept in a bit, then got up and went to Dairy Queen for fastfood happiness (I love their bbq beef sandwiches, which is a cuisine item it's difficult to find on the west coast), then to Mollie Stone's for me to pick up Passover food. As I always am, I was astonished at the variety of stuff available. It really did seem like so much more than last year, but I'm not sure it actually was. Still, I was very happy with the selection, and picked up some cereal and ice cream and (best of all) Passover coke, amongst my other more practical purchases. It's good to know I'll be able to remain fully caffeinated during the holiday. I've been having a lot of fun cooking lately, not just recipes I learned from my biomom but recipes from cookbooks, and some stuff out of my own head. Saturday night I tried some experimental cooking, making Jim beef vindaloo and myself musuman beef, using a spice packet thing for his and a jar of musuman sauce for mine. And I made rice, really bad rice, but I made it myself and it was edible despite being bad. With Passover almost upon us there's still some more stuff to use up, and then Passover itself is pretty much nonstop cooking, after which I'll probably spend several weeks wanting to eat out all the time. It's funny; when I can eat out I don't do it so often (at least not lately), but after a week of enforced eating-at-home I'll be desperate for restaurants, even ones I'm usually not all that fond of. And alas, work beckons. |
